Locally Owned, Focused on You and Your Pet

Our Story Photo V2

Care at Animal Health Center of Leawood is personal, thoughtful, and grounded in trust.

We are a locally owned clinic in Leawood, KS, built around the idea that good medicine starts with listening. That means taking the time to understand your concerns, getting to know your pet as an individual, and working with you to make decisions that feel right for your family.

Our Story

Built With Intention, Shaped by Experience

Animal Health Center of Leawood was founded by Dr. Wilcox after years of working in other practices and knowing she wanted to create something different.

Opening the clinic during COVID was not easy, but it gave her the opportunity to build the kind of environment she had always envisioned. A place where appointments are not rushed, where clients feel heard, and where care is shaped around each pet instead of following a fixed approach.

Today, our team has found its rhythm. With three doctors who complement each other and share a deep curiosity about veterinary medicine, we work together to provide care that is both thoughtful and thorough. We are, at heart, a group of people who genuinely love what we do and are always learning.

In Their Own Words

Our clients are at the heart of everything we do. Many have been with us for years, and their words reflect the kind of care and connection we strive to provide every day.

I love Dr Wilcox and all the staff at Animal Health Center of Leawood. They always go above and beyond and I trust them completely with our pups, Sophie and Finn! The staff is very friendly and always helpful. Dr. Wilcox cares deeply about her patients and is very good at recognizing issues and coming up with the best path for treatment.

So happy with the service and help I received here! My cats vet couldn't fit him in for a minimum of two weeks at least which I couldn't deal with (he was not well but it wasn't by all appearances life threatening). Sue got me in ASAP!!! And then they were so gentle with him. Such a blessing they were.

Great staff all around! Timely fashion with operations from start to finish

Dr. McClain and all the staff are wonderful. Everyone listens and answers all questions. I feel like all our needs are met . Thank you The feeling that the care of my dogs is important to the whole staff.

Dr. Vaughn did an excellent job educating me as I am a first time pet parent. She is kind, helpful, extremely knowledgeable, and so friendly. I am looking forward to our pup's continued care at AHCL. Thank you to all of the kind staff who made us feel so welcome on our first visit!

I told my whole family how great you are. My adult children were excited to hear about you and want to bring their pets in. Everyone was so nice to the dogs and to me. Just very friendly and sweet, they were also knowledgeable and I trust them to care for my dogs.

Dr. Morgan Matile Wilcox, DVM

Animal Health Center of Leawood is a dream turned reality for Morgan. Since she could speak, Morgan has wanted to be a veterinarian. She was excited to start a veterinary hospital where patients and clients would be treated like family.

Morgan Matile Wilcox grew up in Bucyrus, Kansas. She attended Blue Valley High School. Her participation in Johnson County 4-H fostered her love of animals from a very young age. She was able to raise cattle, hogs, and sheep. During high school and college, she spent her breaks from school working in different veterinary clinics and animal shelters to learn as much as she could about veterinary medicine.

Dr. Wilcox graduated summa cum laude from Oklahoma State University with a B.S. in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology. In addition, she graduated magna cum laude from Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine with a DVM. After graduating from veterinary school in 2015, Dr. Wilcox worked as an associate veterinarian in the Kansas City area until the opening of AHC Leawood in 2020.
When not caring for patients, Dr. Wilcox enjoys making memories with her family, friends and pets. She especially loves time spent with her sons, Lincoln and Shepherd- whether they’re building LEGO creations, staging epic nerf battles or chasing the thrills of roller coasters together. Outside of work, she also likes baking, exploring the outdoors and taking family trips to Silver Dollar City.

 Dr. Nancy McClain, DVM

Dr. Nancy McClain was raised in a loving home in St. Louis as the youngest of three daughters. She was strongly influenced by the medical interests of her nurse mother and her sister, who went on to become a zookeeper. During her time at St. Joseph’s Academy, she began shadowing in veterinary clinics and quickly discovered that the field was both fascinating and rewarding, with no two days ever the same. Her journey toward a veterinary career took off when she was accepted into the University of Missouri’s Pre-Veterinary Scholars Program, and she never looked back.

Throughout veterinary school, Dr. McClain worked as a research assistant at the Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction (ReCHAI) and in the ICU at the MU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. She graduated in 2015 and was inducted into Phi Zeta, the veterinary honor society recognizing the top 10% of graduating veterinary students.

Dr. McClain spent six years practicing at Fairway Animal Hospital before joining Animal Health Center of Leawood in 2021. Her favorite part of being a general practitioner is building lasting relationships with clients and their pets. She values the opportunity to partner in their care from the first puppy or kitten visit through their senior years. She is passionate about educating clients on the most effective ways to keep their pets healthy and helping owners navigate health challenges as they arise. While she enjoys the variety of medical and surgical cases that come with general practice, she has a particular interest in joint health and helping patients remain comfortable and mobile throughout their lives.

Dr. McClain resides in Brookside with her husband, Pat; their three children, Henry, Nellie, and Finn; and their Golden Retriever, Tug. She is grateful for their support and loves being part of such a family-friendly practice.

Dr. Hannah Vaughn, DVM

Dr. Hannah Vaughn earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. Following graduation, she practiced at a state-of-the-art veterinary facility in Las Vegas, where she developed extensive experience in dentistry, emergency medicine, and exotic animal medicine.

Dr. Vaughn moved back to Kansas City in 2019 and enjoys rural living with her husband, daughters, and a lively collection of farm animals. Their farm is home to goats, chickens, ducks, geese, cats, dogs, a rabbit and a “pet” wild box turtle named Chip that makes her appearance every year. Her hands-on experience caring for a wide variety of animals at home gives her a unique appreciation for the special bond between all pets and their families.

Dr. Vaughn’s professional passions are surgery and dentistry, with a particular interest in both soft tissue surgical procedures and advanced dental care. She is dedicated to providing high-quality, compassionate veterinary medicine while helping pets live healthier, happier lives.

A highlight of her career was working in South Africa on a project to dehorn rhinos to prevent poaching and provide medical care for elephants, cape buffalo, lions, and more! Dr. Vaughn loves all the opportunities this profession offers and is so grateful to be fulfilling her childhood dream as a veterinarian.

Common Questions About Veterinary Care in Leawood, KS

Frequently Asked Questions

We know you may have questions about your pet’s care, what to expect at your visit, and how our clinic works. Below are some of the most common questions we hear from clients. If you do not see what you are looking for, our team is always happy to help.

Yes, we are currently welcoming new patients. We recommend calling our clinic ahead of time so we can make your first visit as helpful and efficient as possible.

We do not offer payment plans, but we do accept credit cards, cash, and checks. Our team will work with you to provide the best care possible within your budget, and it is always helpful to let us know your comfort range so we can guide recommendations.

Year-round flea, tick, and heartworm prevention is recommended for pets in the Kansas City are because parasites can remain active throughout much of the year due to the region’s climate and heated indoor environments. Mosquitoes can spread heartworm disease during warm months and even on mild winter days, while fleas can survive indoors year-round. Ticks are also active whenever temperatures rise above freezing and can transmit serious diseases. Consistent, year-round prevention helps protect pets from these parasites, reduces the risk of disease, and is generally easier and less costly than treating an infestation or illness after it occurs.

Our appointments are designed to be thorough and unhurried. We take the time to listen to your concerns, examine your pet carefully, and explain what we find in a way that is clear and easy to understand. You will always be part of the decision-making process.

We do our best to accommodate same day visits for urgent concerns. If your pet is not feeling well, call us as soon as possible so we can guide you on next steps and availability.
